Cornell West

Living and Loving Out Loud
Dr. Cornell West is a philosopher, teacher, writer and social activist, who has become a major voice for social justice in the world.
Dr. Cornell West is more than an observer of the human condition; he dares to think out loud.  His provocative views have made him one on American’s best known intellectuals.  Dr. West became involved in social justice while still in high school in California, where he protested for the inclusion of a Black studies course in the curriculum. At age 17 he entered Harvard University, graduating Magna Cum Laude three years later in 1973 with a degree in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization.  He then went on to receive his Doctorate in Philosophy from Princeton University in 1980.
Dr. West has taught at the most prestigious universities in the United States including the Divinity Schools at both Yale University and Harvard University. A prolific writer, he has over 20 published works.  Arguably the most famous is Race Matters published in 1994, which examines among other things, moral authority and race in America.
While teaching African-American
Studies at Harvard in 1998, he was appointed the first Alphonse Fletcher University Professor.  At present he is the Class of 1943 University Professor at Princeton University, teaching in the Center for African American Studies and in the Department of Religion. He holds over 20 honorary degrees, a testament to the effect he has had on society.
Dr. West is truly multifaceted.  Perhaps you remember him as one of the council members in movies, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. He’s been quoted as saying,“A fully functional multiracial society cannot be achieved without a sense of history and open, honest dialogue.”
