Director of Photography

Industry: Film

Lights, camera, action…  Can you visually tell a story?  Can you articulate your artistic vision for this story by bringing to it tone and light and emotions, and an overall sense of proper art direction?  Can you bring the technical knowledge necessary for each aspect of its completion?

The Director of Photography, also known as a Cinematographer, is the individual responsible for the lighting choices that are implemented by the Electrics as well as the framing and style of the shooting of each scene in a Film. Working closely with the Director, they implement his or her ideas and bring the technical expertise to make the story vision come to life behind the camera lens and on the screen.

To be a Director of Photography, a college degree in filmmaking or theatre is very essential.  The hours are often very long and irregular during filming. Many successful Directors of Photography eventually become full-fledged Directors.
