Extra

Industry: Film

For those seeking a fun and rewarding experience… Imagine a movie scene set at a mall. Now imagine if the entire mall was empty except for the actors and actresses speaking their parts. Without Extras, movies would be visually empty and pretty boring.

While Extras do not have speaking parts in Films, they play a vital role. Following the general directions of the Director, they perform actions in the background in accordance with his or her vision for the scene. Often, Extras are chosen for their general appearance based on what is needed for the scene (senior citizen, college student, etc.).

As little or no experience is required to be an Extra, many actors and actresses begin their careers as Extras on films hoping to eventually be hired. Even Directors and Producers start as Extras. While the hours can be long, being an Extra in Films can be a fun and rewarding job that can eventually blossom into a career.
